Review by Nessa Larry

Orchestral Favorites by Frank Zappa is a landmark album that showcases the artist's versatility and creativity as a composer and arranger. The album features a mix of live and studio recordings of Zappa's compositions, performed by a 37-piece orchestra.

The album opens with "Strictly Genteel," a complex and melodious piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The orchestra's precision and Zappa's intricate arrangements create a rich and layered sound that is both challenging and rewarding for the listener.

Other standout tracks include "Duke of Prunes," a hauntingly beautiful piece that features Zappa's signature guitar work, and "Bogus Pomp," a lively and playful number that showcases the orchestra's virtuosity.

Throughout the album, Zappa's humor and irreverence shine through, as he injects his compositions with unexpected twists and turns. The album's closing track, a live recording of "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary," is a prime example of Zappa's ability to blend humor and complexity in his music.

While the orchestral Zappa as such is an interesting aspect, this album suffers from the fact that the tunes themself are well known Zappa songs and therefore this is rather the "re-arranged Zappa".
This is great!

Come to think of it, I do believe this is my favorite Zappa album, right along the Roxy and the Grand Wazoo. Incredible that two of these were captured live.

Thank you, "friend in music" - I ADORE Frank Zappa- still! Always! I didn't know this album existed- his musical output was almost like thoughts, anything, and everything was examined and destined for "vinyl" and release. Arguably, maybe not always optimum- but, as a lover of his unique sense of humor and somewhat offbeat ( no pun intended) opinions and musical tastes, I am interested. ( I've always felt like I'd be some sort of joke to him- I listened to an interview with him and Moon Unit and Dweezil on some late night talk show and I was somewhat surprised at how "square-ball" he was- on cops in L.A.- we need MORE not less so they don't get tired and go wacko- his kids had a curfew I think, and he wasn't a typical 60's proponent of drugs- now I realize when one becomes a parent! I wasn't completely unfamiliar with some of his views as I have tried to semi keep up on him- I can't afford, Rolling Stone and Mojo and I don't trust mainstream media anyhow when it comes to honest reporting on pretty much anything! I'd rather spend my money, what little I have on music- CDs and books- magazines, like most zeitgeist-ian "stuff" have gotten very pedestrian, dumbed down and I must admit to "old fogey" on the use of acronyms and "amazing and awesome" as the only adjectives and punctuation, comes in rather handy...I love JAZZ but admit to owning lots but knowing not much! I am not musical, told by a guitar teacher I am tone deaf- I can't tune my guitar but when I saw that teacher, playing piano, at a restaurant, for the Sunday Brunch crowd- my husband asked me - had to cover his mouth because he was chewing and laughing! He was laughing at "that horrendous piano player and his wrong notes" - had I noticed- I said yes, somewhat vindictive! ( I told him about my exp. with the guy, years before- I DID pick up the wrong notes but I can't tell if a guitar is out of tume- some musicians fiddle on stage, for 15 minutes it seems! Oh well, I can ENJOY AND LOVE THE MUSIC- and I do- I really do enjoy ALL KINDS OF MUSIC- I own medieval passion plays and love Tibetan singing bowls and can handle some Rap- find it monotonous though and being an old hippie, peace-nik, I can't understand the violence- oh I can dig the anger, frustration as a white person- I deplore racism- the idiots that burn a cross on a lawn get walnut brown in the summer- working on my tan!, man- twits...I sound like a Frank Zappa song, with so many albums there probably exists a song about sun worshippers who eat their sun tan oil....Fascinating character Mr. Zappa- died too young- I have 2 photos of him on my front door- conversation starters, ward off Evil! Mostly to draw attention to our Amnesty International sticker so others will join- they seem to accomplish more good than any government- sorry for "babble" I am not well- ever since Covid and those vaccines- I got 3 shots hesitantly- seems to me that Big Pharma rushed it out, TOO FAST- BIG BUCKS and 3 family members, all of them had 4 doses came down with Covid- contracted a variant maybe, came from Canada's west coast to middle- Ontario for their kid's graduation and contracted it- there you go. I have a Topsy turvy circadian cycle now and even melatonin doesn't help- getting run down and lonely- my hubby and pets are sound asleep- been like this for nearly a year- so I write overly long emails- I subscribed to your channel and I promise not to bother you again- I own the album- the Schoenburg? type composer, off, off, classical who inspired Frank- not Harry Partch, he inspires Tom Waits- I can see his face and wild hair- can't get at the album- my mom died recently so our house is full of my parents stuff- and Martha Stewart I'm not- ! I think his last name starts with an "S" too and there does seem to be some sympathetic musical dialogue with Schonberg- pardon my spelling- interesting Zappa album- Amazon would want mega bucks for it- so I'll come to your channel! Do you like Keith Jarrett and Pat Metheny? Too commercial? Yusef Latif/Latef- ?
Well, Wowie Zowie it Ain't David Bowie friends...

Am I The only one that doesn't like the packaging on the CD issue ??? Sliding CDs into cardboard sleeves is a BAD idea!! They could have simply packaged it like other releases such as Hammersmith Odean or Meat Light...This Music Deserves Better.. The ZFT needs to rethink there packaging.. Plus Games and costumes??? JEEEZZZZ..... I LOVE FRANKS MUSIC...Lets get it together Ahmet!!! Sorry Bill I needed a place to vent.

I have never questioned your knowledge of Frank Zappa and this video confirms it. When I moved out of state from OH I had to part with my Jazz From Hell CD. The other CD's I sold back to a record/CD resale in West Park were some that the store owner was eager to chastise me in listening to (a true WTH moment) until he saw my Jazz From Hell CD and then he gave me a pass.
